High dose radiotherapy improves survival for patients with mesothelioma

Mesothelioma is rare, but once it strikes, death is inevitable. This deadly disease is caused due to the risks related to asbestos. A recent research study has found an innovative idea to increase the survival rate and survival period of mesothelioma patients.

The researchers at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSKCC) have researched this and they have presented their results prior to the American Society of therapeutic radiation and Oncology (ASTRO). This study was carried out between 1900 and 2000, and it was listed on various patients at different stages of mesothelioma.

According to this study, the cancer surgery for the removal of the lungs and lining has to be comprehensive, and this should be followed to achieve the desired results a heavy dose of radiation therapy. She observed that these patients none of the toxic effects. You seem to have the treatment and tolerate is good.

"For many years, we were not too much radiation to the chest type due to the extreme toxicity of new technologies, and techniques helped work around us," medical oncologist at the MSKCC and lead author of the study said Santosh Yajnik, MD, radiation. In this study, the entire affected lungs of patients has been removed. It makes it easier also give this radiation therapy a high dose.

MSKCC is one of the centres, which has the facilities to offer this type of treatment. Almost 63 the MSKCC patient treated with extensive surgery. On average, it was seen that their survival improved to 5-6 months by this type of treatment.

Also, the researchers found that people, who in the early stages approached better survival rates compared to those who approached them in the final stages of cancer.
